Throughout the entire 50 year interval, from the beginning of his term on Whitehall Borough Council in 1960 until his death in 2010, Edwin F. (Ed) Brennan was one of the Whitehall Public Library’s truest Friends.

As a Council member, Ed spearheaded efforts in 1960 and 1961 to ensure that the Whitehall Borough building, then being built, would include space for the library and that a startup fund for furniture and shelving would be provided. He chaired a special Steering Committee set up by Borough Council to develop and oversee the detailed planning for the library. He was a member of the original Board of Library Trustees and later served on the Board at various times as the Borough Council representative.

In 1961, Ed was one of the founders of the Friends of the Whitehall Library, a group formed to help create the library. Two years later he was one of the applicants for the Friends’ original Charter of Incorporation and a member of the initial Board of Directors.

He remained active as a supporter of both the Library and the Friends throughout the remainder of his long life. He played an active role in the 1972 and 1988 expansions of the library. In 2001 he published A History of Whitehall Borough and Its Government; donating all proceeds from its sale to the library.

The Whitehall Public Library would not be the vital community resource it is today without the lifelong support of Ed Brennan.
